font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\">The announcement comes off the back of both RBI and SEBI announcing their own <a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/what-does-irdai-vbip-mean-for-insurers\"><strong>video-based KYC<\/strong><\/a> procedures (<\/span><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/rbi-permits-use-of-video-kyc-authentication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\">V-CIP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"> and <\/span><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/sebi-notification-now-allows-paperless-investor-onboarding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-family: 'open sans';\">VBIP<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"> or <strong>Video-based Identification Process<\/strong> is an alternative KYC or identification process in which a trained official from the insurer conducts a face-to-face interaction with the customer to obtain KYC and other identifying information including KYC documents.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/what-does-irdai-vbip-mean-for-insurers\">VBIP<\/a><\/strong> is to be conducted by the insurer on an application that facilitates the process. <a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irdai.gov.in\/ADMINCMS\/cms\/Circulars_Layout.aspx?page=PageNo4246\">IRDAI<\/a> has laid out rules regarding applications that may be used for VBIP &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Insurers must carry out software and security audits of the application before rolling it out to ensure security, robustness and end-to-end encryption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The application or APIs\/web services used must undergo security testing through a CERT-In empanelled vendor\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The application must be end-to-end encrypted using minimum encryption standards such as AES 256<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The application must be hosted within India and must adhere to IRDAI cyber-security guidelines<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>What are the steps involved in <a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/what-does-irdai-vbip-mean-for-insurers\">VBIP<\/a>?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The <a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/irdai-allows-ekyc-for-insurance-companies\">IRDAI VBIP<\/a> circular illustrates the steps to be followed while conducting VBIP as follows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The customer\u2019s consent must be obtained before initiating <strong>VBIP<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\"><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/what-does-irdai-vbip-mean-for-insurers\">VBIP<\/a> must be triggered from the domain of the insurer and not via a third party\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The authorized official will initiate a face-to-face video interaction with the customer and record the live video feed\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The official must ensure that the video quality is sufficient to recognise the customer beyond any doubt and that the customer\u2019s face isn\u2019t covered<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The official will collect identifying information from the customer as follows:\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Through online Aadhaar authentication, subject to the customer\u2019s consent<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Through offline Aadhaar, i.e XML file or QR code, subject to the customer\u2019s consent. In this case, the XML file or QR code must be no more than 3 days old at the time of VBIP. In both online and offline Aadhaar verification, the customer\u2019s Aadhaar number is to be redacted or blacked out\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Through a digitally signed copy of an Officially Valid Document (OVD) issued to DigiLocker<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Through a photo or scanned copy of an OVD using <strong><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/signdesk.com\/\">eSign<\/a><\/strong> mechanism<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The official shall then ensure that the customer\u2019s picture in the Aadhaar or OVD match the customer\u2019s face in the video interaction\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The official will initiate an audio-visual interaction with the customer consisting of a sequence of randomized questions to ensure that the interaction is taking place in real-time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The customer\u2019s location must be determined via geo-tagging technology to be within India\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Once the interaction is concluded, the recorded video must be stored safely with date, timestamps, GPS coordinates and other necessary information<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">The activity log of the interaction must be maintained along with the details of the authorized official<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Any account opened via <strong>VBIP<\/strong> will only be activated following verification and audits<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Finally, the insurer must make sure that the process is seamless, end-to-end encrypted, and real-time by carrying out liveness checks and making use of AI technology for facial matching and identity verification<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>What will VBIP look like in practice?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans'; color: #333300;\">Given all this information, we can make an educated guess as to what <strong><a style=\"color: #333300;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/why-you-should-be-onboarding-customers-with-video-kyc\">VBIP<\/a><\/strong> will look like when insurers roll out an application.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4575 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/IRDAI-Officially-Announces-VBIP-infographic-1-1-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Video Based KYC\" width=\"1000\" height=\"454\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #008000;\"><strong>VBIP for quick &amp; cost-effective <a style=\"color: #008000;\" href=\"https:\/\/melento.ai\/en-in\/blog\/why-you-should-be-onboarding-customers-with-video-kyc\">onboarding<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333300;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px; font-family: 'open sans';\">Insurers and customers can both expect numerous benefits from VBIP.
